Kevin Gates Sentenced to 30 Months for Gun Charge, Expected Release 2019! Members of the rap community rallied around the rapper last month, including Gucci Mane and French Montana, who offered their unwavering support. After serving 180 days in jail for kicking a female fan during a 2015 Florida concert, the troubled Baton Rouge, Louisiana rapper turned himself over to authorities again,   over a warrant for failing to appear for a 2013 weapons charge originating in Cook County, Illinois. His lawyer also told TMZ that he was “pleased with the result of 30 months” considering the charges could have landed Gates behind bars for up to 10 years. Gates pleaded guilty to the charges and received 30 months in prison and will be transferred to the Illinois Department of Corrections, reports TMZ. More bad news for   Kevin Gates.

On Monday (April 24), the “No Problems” rapper performed at San Diego’s Valley View Casino for his Be Encouraged Tour and basically clowned eight of the most popular music labels by reconstructing their logos into something more comical and crude. All this while tauntingly showing off   the three Grammys he won this year   for Best New Artist, Best New Album for Coloring Book and Best Performance for “No Problem,” which featured his buddies 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne. Back in March, Chance disclosed on Twitter the extent of his relationship with Apple, who doled out half a million dollars for exclusive release rights to Coloring Book. Chance The Rapper has disrupted that mindset with his success and is potentially ushering in a new ethos for upcoming artists: you don’t need a label. Perhaps his astute business moves will make doing   independent music your own way the new normal, just as long as you still have your creative freedom and don’t   relinquish your publishing to a large corporation. Many have questioned how Chance got to be so successful. The 24-year-old was named one of   TIME’s 100 Most Influential People this year, and in the magazine’s blurb, fellow Chi-town rapper Common wrote,   “I’m glad Chance followed his dreams. I never felt the need to correct folks on my relationship with @apple but now that more people have tried to discredit my independence.. #chancetherapper #beencouragedtour

During Chano’s production he was backed by a giant video screen that flashed the new label signage. Doubters have incessantly called him an industry plant, pointing at his father’s ties to the Obama family and also questioned his relationship with Apple Music and Jimmy Iovine. @apple gave me half a mil and a commercial to post Coloring Book exclusively on applemusic for 2 weeks https://t.co/dMWwptrHHH
— Lil Chano From 79th (@chancetherapper) March 17, 2017

That was the extent of my deal, after 2 weeks it was on SoundCloud for free. San Diego, Ca – It used to be that getting signed to a major record label meant you were on. I hope he always does.”
But Lil Chano’s trek to independent success hasn’t happened without stark criticism. Only time will tell. — Lil Chano From 79th (@chancetherapper) March 17, 2017

I wanna clear things up. The Be Encouraged Tour is slated to continue throughout the rest of this year, wrapping up October 3 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. I needed the money and they're all good people over there https://t.co/5kIhv0YaKS
— Lil Chano From 79th (@chancetherapper) March 17, 2017

Despite the disclosure, some are still doubtful of Chance’s “true” indie status. Previously, artists would have had to put their work up for sale, which is something the Chicago musician has never felt compelled   to do. Sony turned into Phony, Def Jam Recordings to Don’t Join Recordings, Aftermath Entertainment to   Can’t Do Math Entertainment, Warner Music Group to Wiener Music Group, Virgin to Villain, Motown to No Crown, Epic to Edick and Universal to Undiverse. Chance has   become known for his staunch belief in freedom from record labels and has found much success in it. Those are three awards Chance wouldn’t have been able to win if the Recording Academy hadn’t   changed its rules to allow streaming-only titles to be counted   for nomination. Some astute fans have pointed out that Iovine’s Interscope Records wasn’t included in the lineup of music labels he clowned.

“Dre and Big both showed up separately to say what’s up after the show, but somehow wearing the same Jordans,” he said. Neither would surprise me.”
Killer Mike rose to prominence alongside the Outkast duo on songs like “Snappin’ and Trappin” from 2000’s Stankonia and “The Whole World.” In fact, the Atlanta native even   earned a Grammy Award in 2003   for the latter,   which took home the   golden gramophone for Best Rap Performance By a Duo or Group. Whatever’s going down between them will hopefully benefit Hip Hop purists and music fans alike in the very near future. (The verse ended up being   for Big Boi’s solo album). I’m pretty certain everyone loves the idea, but if/when it happens, it’ll come about naturally. Speculation began to swirl after Killer Mike and Big Boi both posted a photo to their individual   Twitter and Instagram accounts that featured André 3000, Big Boi, Mike and his   Run The Jewels counterpart El-P together in one room. This is one of those "how do I possibly caption this" type situations. “We mostly talked about Big Boi’s upcoming album and the ‘Kill Jill’ joint with Mike, and the fact they were wearing matching Jordans,” Trackstar explained. Run The Jewels’ DJ, aka Trackstar The DJ, who was   in the room when the photos were taken told HipHopDX that while he was supportive of a collaboration between the four MCs, he couldn’t confirm anything concrete. Still, Outkast reunion rumors have been squashed in the past, most recently when a rep for André said there was “no [Outkast] news to report” in September 2016 after Gucci Mane mistakenly claimed he was in the studio   for them. “I don’t know if they had talked and knew each other was coming, or if they just communicate telepathically. For now, check out the photos above and daydream. Die-hard Hip Hop fans, of course, were praying it was an indication they are   all working on a top secret project together, but in reality the photo was taken just after RTJ performed at a private show for Vevo at Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City on Tuesday (April 25). “I can’t really add anything more encouraging than whatever they’ve all already said. Mike’s caption to the photo read: “Ain’t nobody fucking with my clique!!!!!!!”

Ain't Nobody fucking with my clique!!!!!!!! Ice Cold jumped on Frank Ocean’s “Solo (Reprise)” and A Tribe Called Quest’s celebrated album, We got it from Here…Thank You 4 Your service, on the track “Kids” last year, while Big Boi has been staying busy working on his forthcoming project(s). 23 years ago today #SouthernPlayalistic Dropped 4-26-94 crazy Coincidence me and 3000 wearing Matching J's last night #23 #Outkast pic.twitter.com/0DYk40wakI

Outkast famously reunited for a handful of shows in 2014 and took part in the Dungeon Family reunion concert last September, but have been working on their separate solo careers ever since. He’s also scheduled to appear on Big Boi’s forthcoming solo album, Boomiverse,   so it would make perfect sense if the four Hip Hop heavyweights teamed up for something. A post shared by Killer Mike (@killermike) on Apr 25, 2017 at 9:50pm PDT

Daddy Fat Stacks also posted an image with a caption that celebrated 23 years of   Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, and the fact he and André coincidentally showed up wearing the same Jordans. Unsurprisingly, I am firmly in favor.”
Trackstar also revealed it was most likely pure chance that André and Big Boi were in the same place at the same time.

50 Cent – “Statue Of Limitations”

After dropping “Gang Gang” with Maino and “Mask Off” during an episode of   LA Leakers, Uncle Murda   makes a swift return with “Statute Of Limitations” featuring 50 Cent. Titled “Shang Hai,” the visuals puts the Richmond, California rapper in a peaceful garden reflecting on his current relationship situation. WANT MORE? Hawthorne and Jake are still pushing their latest album, Tuxdeo II. the combine – “Dime City”

Los Angeles-based duo The Combine has released a video for “Dime City,” which finds MC Triune and singer E.Q. Tuxedo   – “thank you”

IAMSU! Watch both videos above. Dressed in a high school letterman jacket, he sails through both tracks with ease. The DX Digest for Wednesday (April 26) finds teenage singer-songwriter Khalid’s acoustic versions of “Coaster” and “Angels” in the top slot while Uncle Murda and 50 Cent’s collaborative track, “Statute Of Limitations” sits comfortably in the second slot. reflects on love, Locksmith questions his “Sanity,” and T-Pain flexes his confidence on “See Me Comin.” For good measure, we’ve also thrown in some new material from Max Gertler and The Combine. Yellow Claw f. T-Pain   – “see me comin”

Produced by Dre Moon and X-Plosive, T-Pain’s new loosie, “See Me Comin,” revolves around the topic of confidence. The song serves as a warm-up for his upcoming project, The Chang Project, which arrives this Friday (April 28). Locksmith – “sanity”

Locksmith is on the brink of having the same type of work ethic as the unstoppable Gucci Mane. The Bay Area MC is consistently pumping out new material and now he’s back with another fresh visual for “Sanity.” Directed by J Million, the video follows “Agenda,” “Nobody” and “Neck Pillow.” The song originally comes from his Olive Branch album. Luckily, this loosie just hit the ‘net and can be heard above. MAX GERTLER – “SUPERMAN”

After garnering some attention for his most recent full length project, DI$NEY, Brooklyn rapper Max Gertler swoops in with “Superman.” Over a bouncy, self-produced beat, the 21-year-old artist throws out some goofy one liners, proving he clearly enjoys what he does. Juicy J & Lil Debbie – “City on Lockdown”

Taken from Yellow Claw’s latest album, Los Amsterdam,   certified banger “City On Lockdown” features Three 6 Mafia vet Juicy J and pint size Bay Area cyclone Lil Debbie. Further down, Yellow Claw recruits Juicy J and Lil Debbie for “City On Lockdown,” IAMSU! UnclE Murda f. Although he hasn’t released a proper album since 2011’s Revolver,   apparently his next project, Stoicville, is in the works. IAMSU! Nef The Pharaoh   – “bling blaow”

With features from SOB and Slimmy B of RBE, Nef The Pharaoh’s new single, “Bling Blaow,” brings the funk with its catchy beat and ridiculous hook. Directed by Chito Floriano, the calming visuals coincide perfectly with the melancholy nature of the track. The song comes ahead of The Lenny Grant Story, which is supposedly dropping later this year. takes meditation to a whole other level in his latest video. The X-Ecutioners’ DJ Boogie Blind and his 5 Minutes of Funk routine, Tuxedo’s “Thank You” and Nef The Pharaoh’s “Bling Blaow” complete the Top 5. Coupled with Triune’s emotionally charged, real life raps and E.Q.’s smooth vocals, it’s clearly a match made in heaven. For the subsequent partly-animated video, Debbie styled herself for the many adventures the trio has around Los Angeles that might just involve some booty-shaking. Don’t make them hit you in that Waffle House (or at 50’s show). posted up in front of graffiti-laden buildings and delivering their signature style of Hip Hop. Check out Tuesday’s edition here. Dj Boogie Blind   – “5 minutes of funk”

As a member of The   X-Ecutioners turntablist crew, DJ Boogie Blind is constantly flexing his impeccable scratching skills whenever he gets a chance. The New York-based DJ stopped by Hot 97 for an episode of Funkmaster Flex’s 5 Minutes of Funk series, where he put on a flawless show for nearly 15 minutes. Khalid   – “Coaster” & “Angels”

El Paso, Texas native Khalid is back with a double dose of visuals for the acoustic versions of “Coaster” and “Angels.” The teen R&B crooner was performing music   for the new VEVO series, Stripped, and pulled most of his material from his recent album, American Teen.

This serves as their second appearance together in less than a week, making the internet eager to label the two an item. A courtside appearance from rapper   Travis Scott and Kylie Jenner   has the internet wondering “are they or aren’t they?”
The pair’s joint appearance went down yesterday (April 25) at Houston’s Toyota Center as the Houston Rockets dashed any hopes of a NBA Championship for the Oklahoma City Thunder. Tyga was spotted out with 26-year-old model Jordan Ozuna   last week in a photo that instantly became a meme. Video of their encounter was shared on Twitter last week. News of a possible romance between Scott and Jenner comes days after it was revealed that the Houston rhymer will be joining fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar on his DAMN. Over the weekend, the two were caught holding hands at the Coachella music festival, where Scott performed.

2 Chainz didn’t share any photos of the actual house, but Aunt June certainly loves it and we have no doubt that the “Good Drank” rapper didn’t skimp on quality. I Bought her a house 2012 before I knew I was gone be one of the biggest artists out here …,,still!!! I am very proud of u. And my AUNT JUNE sends me this.”
The touching message from his aunt read: “I am glad that u are blessed to take care of your mom, which she deserves. I love you mom you deserve it! So fit for us both to be blessed. I love you mom you deserve it! 2 Chainz has solidified his spot as a top-tier son by buying a new house for his mom. Many more blessing for u. Going off the top is something of a lost art these days, and Vers: The Rap Game is trying to bring it back. Also, if the Kickstarter passes $100,000, Spatch Games promises to host a ballet that will be broadcast “to the entire world.”
Writing on the Kickstarter page, Spatch explained how he came up with the idea for Vers:
“I was tired of people in university saying I shouldn’t rap because it was unprofessional. The game works by players drawing two cards — one theme card, and one card that has three rhyming words on it that a player must use. The game features 400 cards. So I made the game and it’s fun and silly and everyone can play it.”
This video gives an overview of how the game works: Spatch has set up a Kickstarter to help him produce the game, and he’s already halfway toward his target of $10,000. If you’re thinking about investing in the game, a pledge of $25 or more will get you a copy. Northeastern University student Jerry Spatch has created a card game that could really help any aspiring MC work on their freestyling ability. Everywhere I went, when people heard about rap they’d think of a bunch of things that it wasn’t. For a pledge of $3,000, Jerry will visit you (provided you live in the Continental US) and   you’ll get some tea together. We’re no maths geniuses but we’re pretty sure that comes to a whole lot of combinations — meaning the game should have a great shelf-life.

had in fact topped the Billboard 200 chart with its first week sales, Billboard reports that the album is heading toward a second week at the top of the coveted chart. It marks his third #1 album, and also serves as the highest-selling debut of 2017. Days after it was confirmed that Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. Following the release of DAMN., Kendrick fans were apparently struck with a bit of nostalgia given that all four of his albums broke into the Billboard 200   this week. Released on April 14, DAMN. has accomplished plenty for Kendrick in the past two weeks. The album, which received emoji-filled praise from K.Dot’s mama, is predicted to sell between 220,000 and 240,000 equivalent album units in the week ending April 27. Kung Fu Kenny is showing no signs of stopping when it concerns his elite placement on the Billboard 200 chart.

Other Hip Hop acts to grace the HARD Summer stage include Migos, Ty Dolla $ign, E-40, Mike WiLL Made-It, Tink, Egyptian Lover and Skepta fresh off his appearances on Drake’s   More Life. Thank you for an amazing 10 years. The two-day festival, which will be held August 5 and 6 at the Speedway in Fontana, California, features DJ Snake and Rae Sremmurd as headliners for the first night while Snoop Dogg will be performing   Doggystyle to close out the weekend. Dre. This one is very special to me. Fontana, CA – This year, HARD Summer is celebrating its 10th anniversary and festival founder Gary Richards aka Destructo is doing it big for the celebration. Then the records started catching on and so I wanted to bring in more rap and everyone was like, ‘You got to meet Wax. I could’ve never envisioned it being this big but I’m not mad at it.”

You are the best lets party HARD this summer. “I got a record label, so I used to always make records and then no one buys records, so I was like, ‘I guess I’m just fucking done.’ I didn’t know what I wanted to do, so I decided I’d go back to DJing and try to sell concert tickets and started HARD, and then a couple years into it just started going to the studio more trying to make some records. After more than two decades in the game, Snoop is preparing to release his   Neva Left album in May. “It’s just crazy. Los Angeles / So Cal always having my back. Destructo spoke with HipHopDX last year about the popularity of the festival and how he’s bridged the worlds of Hip Hop and EDM. He recalled making a DJ play while he got cash to pay 2 Live Crew before they would take the stage, among other memories that make HARD Summer special to him. The Doggfather released the album in 1993 with the classic cuts “Gin and Juice” and “Ain’t No Fun (If the Homies Can’t Have None).”   Doggystyle   was   his debut after getting on West Coast anthems “Deep Cover” and “Nuthin But a ‘G’ Thang” with Dr.

Maybe it means this.’ But at the same time, music is universal. Maybe it doesn’t mean what I thought. Now, practically all Hip Hop fans can quench their thirst for knowledge equally as Spotify and Genius have released their “Behind the Lyrics” feature to Android. To celebrate the expansion to Android, Khalid is sharing the stories behind every track on his   American Teen album. The program was initially introduced to iPhone iOS last year with “Fact Tracks” where users were given anecdotes to songs right as the music played. But with this, you can see what the artist felt. The rising star shares why he believes in the program. “Genius’s Behind the Lyrics on Spotify is very helpful because it gives you insight on what the artist was thinking about when they created the record. ‘You know what? Music can mean anything you want.”
Spotify users can find the available tracks from “Behind The Lyrics” on the “Behind The Lyrics: Hip Hop” and “Today’s Top Hits” playlists. “You listen to a record, and you interpret it your own way. It also lets you think about things you didn’t think of before,” Khalid says to Spotify.
